There are 2 kinds of adrenal insufficiency. Production of cortisol by the adrenal gland is controlled by the pituitary gland hormone called adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), which, in turn, is controlled by a brain hormone called corticotropin-releasing hormone (CRH). Adrenal androgens are the hormones that are responsible for the development of pubic and underarm hair. Cortisol is a hormone that helps to maintain blood sugar levels and helps in metabolism of fat, protein, and carbohydrates.
